Should Small Airports Have More Security? Essay -- Airport Explosives,
Airport Security has always been extremely important, but even more so since the attacks on September 11, 2001. When flying out of Oââ¬â¢Hare International Airport you go through multiple security checks. At Canton Municipal Airport there is no security other than a four foot tall fence. Security is the degree of resistance to or protection from harm (Wikipedia, Security). It applies to any vulnerable and valuable asset, such as a person, dwelling, community, nation or organization (Wikipedia, Security). Is it necessary to have security at small airports; are there holes in the current security system, and what problems may arise for small airports? Seven hundred and thirty million people travel on passenger jets every year, while more than 700 million pieces of their baggage are screened for explosives and other dangerous items (H, n.d.). The first line of defense in airport security is the most obvious: Fences, Barriers, and Walls (Works, n.d.). In contrast, Canton airport has a fence, but they lack metal detectors, x-ray equipment and security personnel. One of the most important measures at an airport is confirming ID such as a driverââ¬â¢s license or passport (Works, n.d.). The pilots at Canton airport have a key card that allows them access into the gated area. They do not have to provide photo identification. Going through security in larger airports can be very time consuming and frustrating. If smaller airports had security it wouldnââ¬â¢t be as frustrating. Many Americans feel that from the time they get into the airport, to the time they get out they are being treated very rudely and like criminals (News).
